Let Them Eat Cake

We just had a really big (OK, huge) decision making weekend. Thinking about all the "details" makes my head spin. One thing we decided on is the cake. Red velvet it is. We haven't decided on how we want the cake to look just yet, but there is plenty of inspiration out there.
One thing that has not escaped our notice is how inflated wedding prices are on everything. The cake is no exception. Regular cakes start at $3.00 per serving. Same cake as a "wedding" cake and it starts at $5.00 per serving. Is there some sort of magical ingredient in the wedding version that makes it cost more?

  1. Well, according to Wikipedia, "achieving a dense, strong cake that can support the decorations while remaining edible can be considered the epitome of the baker's art and skill." Personally, I think the secret ingredient to inflated wedding prices is a very simple one; starts with a "B" and ends with "-zilla". Supply-and-demand becomes a fascinating topic when the typical demand is for perfection and opulence.

  2. OK there Cakeman :) Good point. Do you think there's a discount for ordering something heavenly delicious and cute without the tantrum?

  3. Possibly... from what I've seen/heard, that might be quite a pleasant surprise to some of these vendors. :)

  4. What is red velvet? Some kind of chocolate, I hope :-) Whatever you pick, I'm sure it will be gorgeous. Too bad we don't have a baker in the family!

  5. Red Velvet cake is very good. We put a lot of thought into our cake and I didn't even get to eat any of it.

  7. Hi, Mike. Glad you approve of our cake choice. Red Velvelt is my personal favorite. Even better if it's Red Velvet Cheesecake, but that really wouldn't work well for a wedding cake.

  8. I have never considered myself a Southerner even though I am from Virginia, because I'm from Nothern Virginia. Yes, there really IS a difference. Red Velvet cakes are very popular in the South and mostly at Christmas.

Some say it has no taste at all, some describe it as having a hint of chocolate, and other say it just tasted like a regular white or yellow cake. All of the good variations I've had lean toward having a chocolate taste.

What makes this cake so delicious is the frosting. Two words. . .cream cheese. It's also a very moist cake and is dense, so it's ideal for a wedding cake.

  9. And speaking of cake. . . we had a lovely dinner at Clyde's with my dads when Rick was down here last weekend. And they brought us the most scrumptious and adorable red velvet cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcake. Each one was topped with a tiny little heart. Thanks dads!
